Punjab DA Raised From 42% to 60%
Punjab Government has announced that Dearness Allowance for around 85,000 eligible employees will be increased from 42% to 60%.
The measure applies primarily to employees recruited after 17 July 2020 whose Basic Pay follows the Central Government's 7th Pay Commission pay pattern.
Which Punjab Employees Are Covered?
The DA revision concerns employees recruited after 17 July 2020 whose pay was fixed under a Central Government-aligned 7th Pay Commission structure.
Reports indicate that the beneficiary group includes employees across several departments and cadres.
| Employees Covered | Approximately 85,000 |
|---|---|
| Recruitment Cut-off | After 17 July 2020 |
| Old DA Rate | 42% |
| New DA Rate | 60% |
| DA Increase | 18 percentage points |
How Much Can Salary Increase?
The exact increase depends on an employee's Basic Pay. The DA difference is 18 percentage points.
For example, if Basic Pay is ₹30,000:
In this example, the monthly DA amount would increase by about ₹5,400 before considering any other salary components or deductions.
DA Difference at Different Basic Pay Levels
| Basic Pay | DA at 42% | DA at 60% | Monthly Increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹20,000 | ₹8,400 | ₹12,000 | ₹3,600 |
| ₹30,000 | ₹12,600 | ₹18,000 | ₹5,400 |
| ₹40,000 | ₹16,800 | ₹24,000 | ₹7,200 |
| ₹50,000 | ₹21,000 | ₹30,000 | ₹9,000 |
These figures are simple illustrations based only on Basic Pay and the DA percentage difference.
Why Was There a DA Difference?
Employees recruited after the July 2020 cut-off were placed on Central Government-aligned pay scales or pay matrix levels.
However, their Dearness Allowance had continued to be linked to Punjab's lower DA rate, creating a difference between the pay structure and the DA rate applicable to these recruits.
The 60% DA move is intended to bring this employee category closer to the Central pay pattern used for their salary structure.
What About Other Punjab Government Employees?
The 60% DA announcement does not resolve the broader pending DA and Dearness Relief arrears dispute involving other Punjab Government employees and pensioners.
Employee organisations have continued to demand pending DA instalments, arrears and other service-related benefits.
Employee Protests Continue
Despite the DA revision for the 85,000-employee group, employee organisations have continued protests over pending arrears and other demands.
The Punjab Government has also taken administrative steps during the ongoing employee agitation, making the broader DA issue an active and developing story.
Employees Should Check the Final Government Order
Employees should verify the final Government notification or departmental order for the exact implementation date, eligible categories, payment procedure and any arrears treatment.
